Gene, I agree that education and self-awareness are two critical pieces in working with your ADHD. I'm glad that I was able to help you with this. And, as I always say, the decision of whether to take medication or not is very personal; I'm glad that your decision not to take is working for you!

Very Good as usual! Such a tough decision--to medicate or not!! So many pros and cons. I work with lots of families--very difficult for parents/clients to consider!

Hi, Read the preceeding stuff. No Adderall for 2 mo. I feel good about that. Lack of adderall is easily apparent when I'm emotional. I do recognize this at the moment and am able to control myself, mostly. I rely on education to see myself in that moment. "Education" translates to self awareness learned with your help and everyone's help. Gene

Hi,
I just want you to know that your "newsletters" are top rate. The above piece is especially useful, and I will download it now and use it to create a plan. I am taking steps to start my own business (which has several steps laid out in order to earn certification, so there is some important structure built in), and the more time I spend on this, the more essential it is that I continue developing discipline in daily practices re all other areas of my life.
If I am able to get funding for start-up costs, good coaching will certainly be a priority. I know I have said this before, but I would love to be able to hire you. When I get up and running, I'm hoping I will be able to afford the ongoing supports that I need to manage my life well.
Thank you again.

Hi Marla,
I'm a productivity coach with a background in GTD. I've seen various clients where implementing the entire GTD system just isn't a fit for their personality type.
I really like your questions in helping someone identify if GTD can work for them. GTD is a big commitment, despite David Allen's little note of encouragement that you "already know how to do this".
People with and without ADHD should look at whether they are ready to invest in a new system, before diving into a major overhaul that could become a source of discouragement if it doesn't stick. I'd rather have my clients succeed with one tiny improvement, then on to the next. I'm guessing you're in the same boat.

Hi Marla! Great as usual! My "favorite topic": Lists. Have too many--need better organizational skills. And def need to consolidate them--too many pieces of paper let alone notes I write in my date book (some of which are a priority "to do"!) Have been immobilized to do this! May not even take too long and I may find some of those items were done (doubt it!) or may no longer be necessary (hopefully!) Have I mentioned I can do some of these tasks on my new phone?? But need to find the time to figure this out, too! Vicious circle--but at least I would be able to get rid of most, if not all, of my post its and scraps of paper!! Wish me luck!! Looking forward to next article--how to begin all of this!! Fran

Below is a comment I received from one of my newsletter subscribers:

"Thank you for your comments on "GTD". The system's assumptions sure seem to be questionable for the ADHD brain. I had purchased the book and associated material before we started coaching, and had not made any headway."

Ruby,
I agree that they do not teach time management skills very well in school. And it can be very hard to find a way that works for you. Especially, if you have ADHD. But I think most people have tasks that they need to do if they want to reach their goals. So, it is not always possible or desirable to say, "I'll get to it when I get to it." Thoughts?
Thanks for commenting,
Marla
