| Dear Reader,
I am very excited to introduce Cummins Coaching and Training. After fifteen years in education, including eleven years teaching middle school and high school and three years in my current position as an Academic Support Specialist at Boston University, I remain very passionate about education and personal growth, my own and others'.
It is with this passion that I developed my company. I coach private clients and provide training on a variety of topics. While I have a diverse client base, my coaching specialties include undergraduate and graduate college students and ADHD coaching.
The two articles below demonstrate how I help people in my areas of specialization.
Please visit my website for more information. I look forward to hearing from you.
Warm Regards,
Marla

Coaching College Students For Success
For me, the power of coaching college students is seeing them as creative, resourceful and whole just as they are. This means that I do not need to fix them. In fact, holding them 100% responsible for taking the actions necessary to reach their goals and have the life they envision will help them develop their own innate skills. Do you remember the facts below? Maybe not...
You remember approximately 10 percent of what you read.
You remember approximately 20 percent of what you hear.
You remember approximately 30 percent of what you see.
You remember approximately 50 percent of what you hear and see together.
You remember approximately 70 percent of what you say (if you think as you are saying it).
You remember approximately 90 percent of what you do.
Coaching is about learning and doing. When I coach students, I help them to consistently apply what they learn through coaching in order to maximize the effectiveness of our work together. A doctoral student, P.D., makes this point below.
"Marla's most unique skill is her ability to ask questions that help me to step outside of myself for a moment and take a hard look at my motivations and decision making processes. Her questions have helped me to become more independently active in that I now know how to ask myself the kinds of questions that Marla might ask me. Without Marla's help, I probably would not be as far along in my job search as I am now and would still be far from finishing my degree."
In order for coaching to have a long term effect, students must learn from the action that they take. The students I work with are motivated to reach their goals and, therefore, are committed to learning and self development, as seen in the comments of J.L., a freshman.
"After discussing whatever is on my mind, whether it be a goal that I wanted her to help me work on or a problem I needed her to help to figure out, Marla always asks me to reflect on what I've learned and what I'm going to do differently in the future. This shows the client that Marla's work is not superficial- it is not just finding the quick and easy solution but how I can do things differently in my life so I won't have this problem down the road."

ADD Coaching: Someone in Your Corner
For people who have ADD, you know how great it is or certainly can imagine how great it might be to have people in your life who understand ADD. What does it mean to understand ADD?
1. First, of course, acknowledging that ADD exist in adults
2. Understanding that ADD is caused by biological factors and has a genetic basis
3. Knowing that people with ADD because of their cognitive differences can be highly creative, energetic and productive
4. Realizing that treatment (structure, exercise, coaching, medication...) is about helping people with ADD create the life they want, not fixing them
5. Standing firm in the belief that people with ADD are not deficient
An ADD coach who understands the above is off to a good start. In addition, in order to successfully work with ADD clients, coaches must also understand specifically how ADD can manifest itself and be able to assist the clients in addressing those areas that the client finds problematic in reaching their goals and "living their values."
My understanding of ADD and my ability to assist clients in reaching their goals comes from both my professional and personal experiences. While I am always reading and attending workshops, I have formal training from Landmark College. I also taught middle and high school for 11 years and am currently an Academic Support Specialist at Boston University. Being a life long learner with regard to ADD is quite literal for me, as both my daughter and I have ADD. So, my learning never ends...
With this strong professional, educational and personal foundation, I am able to help my clients clarify and reach their goals, by focusing on their strengths to create solutions in their areas of challenge. This is evident in the comments below made by one of my clients, J.D., a writer.
"Marla offers a non-judgmental, objective appreciation for the large and small difficulties and success that are not apparent to myself, and a way to order these things so that they can be confronted and appreciated, respectively. Marla has helped me see what appear to be insurmountable problems as just small impediments. She helps me by keeping a focus on the challenge I feel in organizing and constantly reviewing how to strike a balance between letting my schedule get out of control and focusing too intently on it and thus losing track of the bigger picture."
I can help you to keep your eye on your big picture. If you need someone in your corner to move forward, please contact me at marla@marlacummins.com
