Answer These Questions To Find Out"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u00a0As I\u2019ve written about in the past, both eating and exercising can be part of a holistic treatment plan for ADHD .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week in my article, <a title=\"The Two Key Steps To Creating The Change You Want\" href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/key-steps-creating-change\/\">The Two Key Steps To Creating The Change You Want<\/a> I shared with you a bit about my challenges with eating well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not the case with exercise, though. Over the last two years I have been able to consistently exercise. Though I have fallen off the wagon, of course, I have been able to resume within a short amount of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know that both are \u201cgood for me.\u201d In both cases, I know the <strong>vital behaviors<\/strong> that that will give me the <strong>greatest leverage<\/strong> and allow me to <strong>persist<\/strong>. See last week&#8217;s article for more on this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are an adult with ADHD, you likely have a number of perplexing examples like this. Can you think of them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I bet you are curious as to why even when you have the information you need, you can succeed in one area but not in another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is It Motivation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One <strong>possibility<\/strong> is that we are simply not <strong>motivated<\/strong> to do what we think we should do.&nbsp; For adults with ADHD, if we can\u2019t tap into our motivation for taking action, it will feel like swimming through molasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of eating and exercising, motivation is definitely the difference for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have determined that both are<strong> worth doing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, whereas with exercise I know can do it, this is the not the case with eating well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of exercise, it is easy for me to persist. Yes, it is more like cutting through water. I have had enough <strong>experience<\/strong> to <strong>know I can do it<\/strong>, which allows me to stay <strong>motivated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is It Worth Doing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&nbsp; answered this question with regards to exercise in the following way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>with the release of endorphins it gives me an immediate sense of well being and improves my mood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>helps me sleep better<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clears my mind of the multitude of thoughts that may be racing about, which helps me to be more centered and productive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I worry less<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>keeps my weight in check and makes me feel stronger<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>helps as part of treatment plan for ADHD and depression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>helps me to be more present in two of primary roles as a coach and parent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>likely part of the reason that I rarely get sick<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>no more back pain, which I used to have on a somewhat regular basis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a nice break from my other responsibilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Wow! After doing this list I am even a bit surprised. It is helpful to see it on paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I Do It?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before doing the above list, I knew that exercise was worth doing. But knowing that I can do it is really what keeps me going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How did I determine that I could do it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>experience through practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>through experience I came to believe I could do it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>hearing and seeing other people struggle and succeed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>talking to other people about their experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>seeing setbacks as information for how to make changes, rather than as a signal that I failed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I think the last point is the most important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ADDed Perspectives Bottom Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Answer these question for a goal you are working toward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is it worth doing?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can I do it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you answer, &#8220;yes.&#8221; If you can, motivation is likely not getting in your way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your answer is &#8220;no&#8221; or &#8220;I&#8217;m not sure,&#8221; it will be harder to succeed, especially if you have ADHD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need help in deciding if it is worth it, ask someone to help you answer this question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need help deciding if you can do it, ask for support&nbsp; in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>designing and creating the experiences you need to have the experience of success<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>creating strategies to help you over the inevitable hurdles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>looking at the hurdles as temporary setbacks, not permanent failure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need help beyond what your friends and family can offer, explore the different <a href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/adult-adhd-coaching-services\/\">types of support I offer<\/a>.
