You knew that&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This series of articles will help you be more <b>aware<\/b> of those <b>challenges<\/b>, as well as the <b>workarounds<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/adhd-work-environment\/\">Part I<\/a> I shared strategies for deciding which tasks become part of your work. And in <a href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/workarounds-adhd-workplace-challenges\/\">Part II<\/a> I began the exploration of common workplace challenges for Adults with ADHD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Read on<\/b> to <b>continue this exploration<\/b> in the article below, the last in the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working With Time &#8211; Time Sense<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When dealing with time the question is, &#8220;<b>When am I going to do&#8230;.?&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, because time is often an elusive concept for adults with ADHD, this may be a hard question for you to answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead you find yourself saying,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;I forgot to put &#8216;this&#8217; on my calendar.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;It is already \u00ad\u00ad\u00ad______ (fill in the time)!&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;m going to be late, again!&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I have no idea how long this is going to take.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;m sorry&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many adults with ADHD you&#8217;re orientation is often in the here and now. That is, your tendency may be to think of time as &#8220;now&#8221; and &#8220;not now.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this may be true for you at the moment, you can change this habit<b> <\/b>by practicing new <b>skills and<\/b> adopting the right <b>tools<\/b> in order to <b>strengthen your sense of time<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few suggestions to get you started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check out tips to practice <b>looking ahead <\/b>so you are on time and ready for your appointments in <a href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/adhd-time-4-steps-places-time\/\">ADHD and Time: 4 Steps to Getting Places on Time<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time and record how long it takes you to do tasks in order to get better at <b>estimating time<\/b>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Overestimate<\/b> how much time you need for tasks to account for the unexpected, like traffic, long lines, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rather than scheduling tasks back to back, include <b>transition time <\/b>(white space)<b>.<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <b>alarms<\/b> to <b>remind<\/b> yourself when it is time to transition or as a cue to <b>reflect<\/b> on whether you are doing what you intended. For purposes of the later set the alarm for regular intervals, like an hour apart.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only put <b>fixed appointments<\/b> in your <b>calendar<\/b> so you can see where you <b>must be<\/b> at any given time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While you can improve your sense of time and use tools to be more aware of time, you can&#8217;t control it. That is, we all have the same 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Task Management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But, though it may not feel like it sometimes, you do have more <b>control over your tasks<\/b> and can actively manage them by answering the questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What do I <b>have to do<\/b> now?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What <b>can I do<\/b> now?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A challenge, to be sure, for adults with ADHD. As it may often feel like the tasks are just swimming madly about in your head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <b>first step<\/b> is to <b>choose a container<\/b> for all of your tasks so you can get it out of your head and make decisions. Here are a few options you can choose from depending on your style and preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a paper based planner, <a href=\"https:\/\/plannerpads.com\/\">Planner Pad<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a simple application, like <a href=\"https:\/\/workflowy.com\/\">Workflowy<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a more complex application, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omnigroup.com\/products\/omnifocus\/\">Omnifocus<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nozbe.com\/\">Nozbe<\/a>. Here is a an <a href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/adhd-task-manager\/\">overview<\/a> of how to use these.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a mind map, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xmind.net\/\">Xmind<\/a>. Here is one way to use a mindmap to manage your tasks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope you give yourself a break, though, and remember task management is <b>not about<\/b> trying to see how many tasks you can check off each day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is about making sure you are taking those actions that are in <a href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/5-steps-working-adhd-struggle\/\">alignment with your goals and values<\/a>. So, the <b>second step <\/b>is to practice making decisions about your tasks using the <a href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/adhd-productivity-action\/\">4 D&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the <b>third step<\/b> is figuring out <b>when<\/b> to do the tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For <b>long term projects<\/b>, it is only necessary <a href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/adhd-projects-method\/\">to plan in as much detail as necessary<\/a> to keep the project out of your head in order to determine the next action step.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On a <b>day to day level<\/b> using <a href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/do-you-know-which-task-to-do-now\/\">David Allen\u2019s Four Criteria Model<\/a> will help you become more flexible and agile in figuring out which tasks to do within the constraints you have.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This all <b>takes practice<\/b>, as well as <b>support<\/b>. So, seek out help as you need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impulsivity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the above sounds great, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, if impulsiveness is one of your challenges, the best of plans can easily go awry when you find yourself saying<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;Sure I can do that&#8221; before looking at everything on your plate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;ll be at the meeting&#8221; before looking at your calendar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;No problem, I can help you with that&#8221; before thinking about whether you really want to help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;ll just start wherever&#8221; before taking time to create a plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is to give yourself permission to <b>slow down and be intentional<\/b>. I know. This may be especially hard when you are feeling overwhelmed already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To curb your impulsivity, get in the habit of replacing some of the above with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;I may be able to do that. Let me just make sure. Is it ok if I let you know by tomorrow?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I just need to check my calendar and I&#8217;ll get back to you this afternoon about setting up the meeting.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;m swamped right now. I don&#8217;t thing I can help you. Can I check in with you when my time frees up? Sorry.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Bob, can you help me brainstorm a bit? I&#8217;m not really sure how to sequence this project.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I bet you will be surprised at how this will <b>help to minimize your overwhelm<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next Steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Like all recommendations, some may apply to you and some may not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My intent in this series is to <b>highlight<\/b> the various aspects of your workplace that may be a challenge for you because of your ADHD and to offer you an introductory <b>overview<\/b> of&nbsp; how you may address these challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope that you will take a &#8220;deeper dive&#8221; in looking at your particular workplace challenges and how you can address them to make you work life easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Yes, everyone has challenges at work.
