If you are making these missteps now, <strong>don\u2019t worry<\/strong>. Because, as you <strong>become aware<\/strong> of them, you can <strong>learn how to<\/strong> <strong>sidestep them. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then the journey of learning to manage your ADHD will be far <strong>less frustrating<\/strong>,<strong> easier, <\/strong>and, yes, even<strong> enjoyable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1 Thinking Your Challenges Are Like Everyone Else\u2019s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may start your journey of managing your ADHD, as many do, by focusing on your challenges, telling yourself\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI need to plan better.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI want to work faster.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI have to be better organized.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI need systems, structure and processes\u2026!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But have you taken the time to <strong>learn how your brain works<\/strong>? That is, how are your ADHD symptoms affecting your ability to accomplish what you want? Without first understanding this it is hard to create effective workarounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>example<\/strong>, a common challenge for Adults with ADHD is a poor memory. Once you acknowledge this, you can stop saying, \u201cI\u2019ll remember that.\u201d Instead, you can commit to figuring out <a href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/adhd-and-20-ways-to-remember-what-you-want\/\">how to remember what you want<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"># 2 Thinking It Will Be Easy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also start out reading some books, scouring the internet, listening to some podcasts\u2026 And, as you are devouring the information, you think, \u201cHuh, that looks easy. I\u2019ll try that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you give some of the strategies a try. Some work. And, when others don\u2019t work, you get frustrated and maybe even give up, saying \u201cIt looked so easy! Why can everyone else do this and I can\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be <strong>confusing <\/strong>two very different concepts<strong>, easy and simple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many out of the box <strong>strategies<\/strong> often <strong>seem <\/strong>fairly straight forward<strong>, simple<\/strong>. At least their explanation makes them seem so\u2026. But the <strong>process of carrying them<\/strong> out is often <strong>not easy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good <strong>example<\/strong> of this is David Allen\u2019s <em>Getting Things Done<\/em>. In his introduction he says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026everything I propose is easy to do. It involves no new skills at all. You already know how to <\/em><em>focus<\/em><em>, how write things down, how to <\/em><em>decide<\/em><em> on outcomes and actions, and how to <\/em><em>review <\/em><em>options and <\/em><em>make choices<\/em><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an adult with ADHD, you know that doing the above is not necessarily easy, though it sounds simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here is the <strong>good news<\/strong>! As with many other examples, even if you may struggle with these skills now, you <strong>can<\/strong> <strong>learn them<\/strong> as long as you are <strong>patient <\/strong>and <strong>compassionate<\/strong> with yourself along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3 Wanting To Do &#8220;It&#8221; Like Everyone Else<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the reason you think it (whatever\u201dit\u201d is) will be easy is that you look around and see other people operating with what seems to be considerable ease. Of course, if it is so easy for others, you would <strong>want<\/strong> to do it like them. Makes sense!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, if you have not learned how to operate in a way that honors how you work best, including in a way that works with your ADHD, you may fall short. So, wanting to do it like everyone else can leave you feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/adhd-shame\/\">ashamed<\/a> and frustrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if you decided you don\u2019t need to do it like everyone else?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if instead you figured out what <strong>works best for you<\/strong>? Maybe <strong>you want<\/strong> it to look like this: <strong>Choose \u2013 Implement \u2013 All Better<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who wouldn&#8217;t want this?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you know the process of learning new ways of operating are not as linear as you might like because it takes <strong>time<\/strong> to <strong>unlearn old habits<\/strong> and<strong> learn new habits<\/strong> that serve you better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, you may still have this \u201cQuickie Mart\u201d picture in your head. If this is the vision you are carrying around, you will likely become easily discouraged when the changes you want do not happen overnight. The key is to make sure your <strong>vision<\/strong> of how <strong>you plan<\/strong> to create change in your life, including managing your ADHD, <strong>matches<\/strong> what you <strong>know about how change happens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You know it takes time. So, once you are committed to taking action to manage your ADHD, <strong>allow yourself<\/strong> the <strong>time<\/strong> and <strong>space<\/strong> to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>take on only as much as you have the capacity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experiment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reflect<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>deal with inevitable setback as they come up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>determine what is working and build your toolbox of best practices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The journey will definitely feel better when your <strong>expectations match what is<\/strong>, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#5 Trying To Do It Perfectly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>And what about perfectionism? Do you have a <strong>picture<\/strong> of what it will be like when you are <strong>managing your ADHD perfectly<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe you imagine\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>getting your work done a couple of days before the deadlines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>arriving to places on time \u2013 every time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>following through on every commitment you make \u2013 no dropped balls anymore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>never speaking out of turn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, I bet you would not expect others to be able to do all of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are striving to be perfect, you are setting yourself up by having unrealistic expectations. Because, of course, <strong>perfect does not exist<\/strong> and the <strong>costs<\/strong> of striving for it is just <strong>too great<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For most of us<strong> good enough<\/strong> is the <strong>best we can do<\/strong>. So, envision what good enough might look like for you. And then acknowledge and appreciate the success in striving and making incremental changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all, many people do not try or quit because they can\u2019t do it perfectly. You don&#8217;t want that to be you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#6 Thinking You Can Do It Alone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>And we all need help. It is too hard to go through life trying to do everything by ourselves. And that help can come from many sources, including friends, family, colleagues and professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It could be you are resisting asking for what you need because you think you should be able to do it on your own. Yet, you may be more than willing to help others in need. Hmmm\u2026 Interesting, don&#8217;t you think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about where you need help, ranging from the mundane details of life to the more important, like\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>finishing your report<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>managing your ADHD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cleaning the garage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>doing your finances \/taxes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>building your business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than struggle alone or give up when the going gets tough, reach out and ask for help.
