{"id":8903,"date":"2024-02-09T18:56:33","date_gmt":"2024-02-09T18:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/?p=8903"},"modified":"2026-02-22T14:45:46","modified_gmt":"2026-02-22T19:45:46","slug":"adhd-finding-your-motivation-when-youre-not-interested","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marlacummins.com\/stage2026\/adhd-finding-your-motivation-when-youre-not-interested\/","title":{"rendered":"ADHD &#038; Finding Your Motivation When You&#8217;re Not Interested"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For ADHD adults, you know it\u2019s easier to follow through on tasks that interest you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what about tasks that don\u2019t<\/span> interest you? If you can delegate in some way or drop tasks that don\u2019t interest you, you should do that. But what if this isn\u2019t possible? It\u2019s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going to take a little bit of extra work to follow through on these tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;The following strategies can help you do this.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What About The Task Turns You Off?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, figure out what about the task turns you off. Here are some possibilities:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bores me. Simple as that.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes too much time and energy because it is hard for me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not important to me.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have too many other tasks on my list, and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m<\/span> overwhelmed. \u201cTake a number and fall to the back of the line\u201d<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is what comes to mind when I think of this task.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mind swirls with all this negative self-talk, and I become paralyzed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve<\/span> figured out why you don\u2019t<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> want to do a task, the next step is to figure out what you can do address those challenges and follow through on those tasks that <\/span><b>must fall on your plate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because often it is the <\/span><b>not deciding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>not doing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can contribute significantly to your feelings of <\/span><b>overwhelm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ADHD and Interest In A Task<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s<\/span> important to remember that your ADHD nervous system is interest-based. This means you are more motivated when something is interesting, challenging, novel, or urgent. When this is true, it is easier to do a task, even hyper-focus on it. It\u2019s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not something that takes very much willpower.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to look at this is whether a task is fun or not<\/span>. When it is\u00a0not fun, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s going to be much harder for you to do<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is in contrast to the importance-based nervous system of neurotypical people. They can turn on the motivation to do something because it is important. You can\u2019t do this, at least not as easily.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create A Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step you need to take is to <\/span><b>create a plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that takes into account all that is needed to complete the task. Because if you\u2019re unsure how to do any part of it, it will make it that much harder to feel motivated. Anytime you run into a roadblock, go back and rework the plan to incorporate whatever it is you need to do to move forward.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remember The Reward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, you need to know the reward for doing the task.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And remember that ADHD adults are motivated more by immediate rewards and find it harder to be motivated by rewards that are distant from the task.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So then, when you sit down to do a report for work that is due in two days, you might instead take care of your emails. You tell yourself, \u201cWow, look at all those emails. I really need to answer those before doing the report!\u201d Then, when a notification from Facebook comes in, you might decide you need a break to look at Facebook before starting the report.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the reward for doing the report is not so obvious or immediate, it is harder to make the connection in the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not enough by itself, it is helpful to make sure you <\/span><b>know the reward<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here are some possibilities for the example of writing the report.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to be successful at my job, and doing reports is just part of the gig.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These reports are important so we have the data we need to make good business decisions.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to be a dependable team player. And Bob really needs these reports.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have a visceral connection to the payoff<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not just an intellectual connection, it is helpful to have a <\/span><b>visual cue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (pictures, quotes, totems, etc.). So you can remember the reward in those moments when you think, \u201cI don\u2019t want to\u2026!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Address Boredom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a plan and knowing the reward are two important steps. But what if the lack of motivation is due to boredom? Here are some strategies you can try to counter this.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do the boring task first, as your willpower will diminish throughout the day.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen to music.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work in an environment that has the right amount of stimulation for you. It could be a cafe, an office, or even your patio.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work with somebody else.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walk on a treadmill.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reward yourself for doing the task.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making a game out of the task, such as \u201cbeat the clock.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take notes during meetings to keep your attention.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a fidget to help keep you on task.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the task may not be interesting, what else can you do to make the time you are working a bit more interesting?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Break It Down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it feels like it takes too much time and energy to do the task, break it down into as many small pieces as possible. So it does not feel so onerous. Then work on it bit by bit. If it still feels too hard, try breaking it down even more. Until you can say, \u201c<\/span>I can do that!\u201d You might try working in 25-minute increments, Pomodoro\u2019s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Work With Somebody Else<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may also want to include a body double. This is someone with whom you work, either virtually or physically side by side, while you each do your own work. This is very effective in staying on task. If you don\u2019t have someone you can work with, you may try a service like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.focusmate.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focusmate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take A Break<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You also want to recognize when you\u2019ve<\/span> reached your limit and don\u2019t have any mojo left and need a break. Because there comes a time when you\u2019ve<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used up all your self-control reserves. Like the other suggestions, there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to what to do during your break.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may want to take just a short break, 10-20 minutes, and then get back to work. You could:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dance to music&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">play a video game<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">play with your pet<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short workout.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other times, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you may need a longer break. Maybe you could:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go for a swim or run<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cook a meal<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read a book<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go out for coffee or lunch<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go for a walk<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What helps you get rejuvenated?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reward Yourself Along The Way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need to wait until the end to reward yourself. Instead, reward yourself for doing a certain amount of work. For example, you might work for an hour and then go for a short walk.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time Your Medication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take ADHD medication, time when you do your work to when you take your medication for optimal results.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be Willing To Withstand Some Discomfort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While all the above strategies can help you when you are just not feeling motivated, it is also important to be able to withstand a bit of discomfort. So you can decrease the chances of avoiding your important work. So when you are not feeling motivated, remind yourself, \u201cThis does not feel great right now.
