ADD – ADHD: You Never Win When You Fight Reality.

Do you ever fight reality? "ADDers" are notorious for fighting against reality, and are also probably familiar with some of the following habits: ruminating excessively about something that happened in the past that you have no control over becoming angry or sad over someone else's action(s) and not being able to gain control over your emotions in reasonable amount of time spending an extraordinary amount of time thinking about how you want things to be different. doing any or all of the above and not exerting control over those matters that are within your power to change. Sometimes, we do the best we can and "stuff" happens; we have no control in these cases, but still have to deal with the end results. Other times…

Rx and College Students with AD/HD

While engaging in my favorite morning ritual of drinking coffee, writing and listening to NPR, I heard this report, "More Students Turning Illegally To ‘Smart’ Drugs," on Morning Edition. I was not surprised to hear of the illegal use of Adderall and Ritalin by college students. I knew that this was occurring when I worked at Boston University. While I was not surprised, I was immediately concerned about how people would interpret this report, especially after hearing from a college senior with ADD, who had a monthly prescription for Adderall. He says that he rarely uses the 60 pills he gets each month, unless he needs to "pull an all-nighter." Instead, he says:"I usually just give it to my friends. I don’t really want to…

What Is ADD Coaching?

What is ADD Coaching? I hear this question all the time. As the field of ADD Coaching is relatively new, many people, understandably, do not know about it. When I was a teacher no one ever asked: “Marla, what is teaching?” Like most of us, they assumed that they knew what the work of a teacher entails. Whether that is accurate or not would make for an interesting conversation. I won’t digress here, though. So, now, as an ADD Coach, I welcome these conversations about my work. It is an opportunity to share my perspective of ADD Coaching, and how this perspective informs my practice. Just like teachers, ADD Coaches describe the service that they provide in different ways. Here is how I have come…

Does ADD Coaching Help College Students ?

For me, the power of coaching college students is seeing them as creative, resourceful and whole just as they are. This means that I do not need to fix them. In fact, holding them 100% responsible for taking the actions necessary to reach their goals and have the life they envision will help them develop their own innate skills. Do you remember the facts below? Maybe not…

ADHD Coaching: Someone in Your Corner

For people who have ADHD, you know how great it is or certainly can imagine how great it might be to have people in your life who understand ADHD. What does it mean to understand ADHD? First, of course, acknowledging that ADHD exist in adults Understanding that ADHD is caused by biological factors and has a genetic basis Knowing that people with ADHD because of their cognitive differences can be highly creative, energetic and productive Realizing that treatment (structure, exercise, coaching, medication…) is about helping people with ADHD create the life they want, not fixing them Standing firm in the belief that people with ADHD are not deficient.

Putting the Pieces Together: Treating Your ADHD

A few months ago I wrote about making the decision to take medication to manage your ADHD symptoms in  What Is The Truth About Medication? . Then a few weeks ago I received the comments below from Pierre de Villiers, who, as with his earlier comments,  has graciously allowed me to share them with you. ….the medication does not solve the problems of everyday ADHD in terms of learning the coping mechanisms and adapting to social norms. Therefore, medication has a place, but the individual needs to realise that the medication impacts one part of the ADHD complex and that he would still have to accept ownership of his/her condition and learn the skill set to cope with ADHD and utilise the positives of ADHD/ADD…

ADD Coaching and Medication: Making The Path Easier

The  decision to take medication to treat ADHD is certainly not black and white. You may have questions, which require that you spend a fair amount of time seeking out satisfactory answers before you can make the right decision for yourself. I addressed some of these questions in my article, Putting the Pieces Together: Treating Your ADHD.
