ADHD Is Not A Real Diagnosis?

My daughter had been through 6 hours of neurological testing over two days by a highly regarded neuropsychologist in the Boston area. When I read Lessons from Atticus: is “ADHD” a problem of not listening? written by a pediatrician, I was reminded of a remark my daughter’s former pediatrician made when I shared with him the report from the neuropsychologist indicating that she had ADHD. His response was, “She is too cute to have ADHD.” What I heard was, “ADHD is not real.” It has been almost 8 year since that appointment. Fast forward to recent years. As of late ADHD seems to have become a lightning rod for attacks from experts and non-experts alike. It is always distressing to me when I read opinions…

ADHD and Creating a Supportive Environment

Too often I see adults with ADHD who believe that the primary way of reaching their goals is to try harder and exert more willpower. After all, if you are one of the many adults with ADHD who was diagnosed later in life, you may have a history of being told that you just need to try harder. So, over time you may have come to internalize this belief. If this is true for you, what if you could design your environment to support you in reaching your goals while exerting less effort? Sure working hard is an important part of reaching your goals. But eventually you will reach your capacity and redoubling your efforts may not yield the results you want. In fact, it…

ADHD and Medication: How Do I Make the Decision?!

The decision to take medication for ADHD can be complicated for many people. Often made more complicated by pieces in the media, such as the recent article Ritalin Gone Wrong by Alan Sroufe, Ph.D., (NY Times, Jan. 29, 2012). As Dr Ned Hallowell noted in his response on his blog,  Dr. Hallowell’s Blog, Dr. Sroufe’s article is “inflammatory rhetoric” filled with “scare tactics and wrong-headed assumptions.” Articles, like Dr. Sroufe’s, can make it more difficult for you to make a decision, as the rhetoric can really cloud your ability to make an informed decision based on facts, if you let it. To help you arrive at a well thought out decision that works for you I’ve put together a 11 page interactive workbook, ADHD and…

ADD – ADHD: Who Can Help Me?

A question I am asked all of the time is: Who do I go to for help? Knowing which professional to go to for help is critical in receiving the correct kind of assistance for diagnosis or treatment. Yet, it can be confusing, as there are so many different resources. The first step is knowing what kind of help you are seeking. Below is a brief explanation of the types of professionals who can provide the help that adults with ADD commonly seek from a professional.   EVALUATION First, I strongly caution against seeing your family doctor for advice or evaluation for any suspected mental health issue, as they typically lack the needed specialized knowledge. This lack of expertise can result in delays in receiving…

Putting the Pieces Together: Treating Your ADHD

A few months ago I wrote about making the decision to take medication to manage your ADHD symptoms in  What Is The Truth About Medication? . Then a few weeks ago I received the comments below from Pierre de Villiers, who, as with his earlier comments,  has graciously allowed me to share them with you. ….the medication does not solve the problems of everyday ADHD in terms of learning the coping mechanisms and adapting to social norms. Therefore, medication has a place, but the individual needs to realise that the medication impacts one part of the ADHD complex and that he would still have to accept ownership of his/her condition and learn the skill set to cope with ADHD and utilise the positives of ADHD/ADD…

Are You Motivated? Answer These Questions To Find Out

As I’ve written about in the past, both eating and exercising can be part of a holistic treatment plan for ADHD . Last week in my article, The Two Key Steps To Creating The Change You Want I shared with you a bit about my challenges with eating well. This is not the case with exercise, though. Over the last two years I have been able to consistently exercise. Though I have fallen off the wagon, of course, I have been able to resume within a short amount of time. I know that both are “good for me.” In both cases, I know the vital behaviors that that will give me the greatest leverage and allow me to persist. See last week’s article for more…
